Settling In

I just need to say, that after two days here I am enjoying myself very much. We have been getting acclimated, so haven't started our volunteer work. We took tours of all the sites today, plus a tour of the city, spanish lessons and orientation.
I am here with 4 others... very small group, they usually have 20-30. But, what that means to us is we each get our own rooms and bathrooms. Very nice accommodations, I expected a squatty poddy... not really. At the very least shared bathrooms.
The travel was horrendous. I actually stayed up all night in the Lima airport. I intended to meet other volunteers, but didn't find any. So, i forced myself to stay awake. You know how fun I can be on lack of sleep.
The city is so very poor, high desert. Very many native population, the roads mostly dirt, houses about like you'd see in any Mexican city.
Tomorrow we start our stint. The girls orphanage has infants that can be adopted apparently, I may go there for some days. The boys too, but they are older boys. No infants. The boys orphanage is neat and well kept. I really want to record this trip photographically. The photos may be used for getting some help here. It would be nice if their could be some sustainable way for the people to earn a liveable wage. Too tough a question for me, though. I just plan to color with a couple of the boys. Make 'em laugh. Give a few hugs.
Hope to blog and post on flikr. So check my web site sometime.
Have no idea what Houston airport alarms were by the way. No one was panicking and running over each other, so must have been nothing.
