Thoughts On Saddam Hussein's Hanging
Call me unAmerican. But I get no delight, revenge or sense of justice in the hanging of Saddam Hussien. I know many disagree, but hear me out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Saddam fan. I am actually a bystander, never once having anything to do with him. Now he's dead by the hands of the new Iraqi government. Did he in the course of many years rule ruthlessly in Iraq? Yes. He was a brutal dictator. My problem is why Saddam? Why not the hundreds of other leaders who are mass killers? Like Idi? Pol Pot? Slobodan Milosevic? Maybe if they were hanged, Saddam wouldn't have taken courage in his regime. I don't know. There were many more before him over the years...and where were we when all the innocent people were being killed? Driving our hummers to the mall, that's where. Why now do we get so self righteous? Is it because of Militant Islamists who bombed our beloved buildings and killed 3,000? Why the two are connected has never been fully explained, so there's a disconnect here. And I think that's why I sense something amiss. I know we as a nation can't rescue all the oppressed and suffering. Or maybe we could somehow do something.
Do I advocate the ostrich approach? No. I don't have any recommendations. I just know I didn't care to see the picture of his noose and bent neck on TV either. I would have been fine with a quiet announcement, or none at all really. It wasn't after all a sporting event. I know it wasn't our justice system, but their's that hanged him. I still feel there's something ominous and even self incriminating about this day and it makes me turn my head and shut my eyes.

I don't know why you put so much thought into this. Also, I personally don't know anyone who celebrated his death. Who cares that the f'er died. I didn't celebrate either, but I am glad we don't have to hear him anymore. He no longer can serve as a propoganda mouth piece for Arab nationalism. I am not sure why you would even mention the US and revenge and 9/11 (?) with this as they gave the final decision and punishment to Iraq-which is where the decision should have stayed. Historically, most tyrannical dictators were punished in International Courts which took away the power of the people to punish their tormentors(unlike Romania's Ceauscescu and Saddam). Unfortunately the international courts are plagued by beaucracies that take too long to decide on the fate and most dictators die of natural causes (Milosovich and Pol Pot). Also most members of the courts do not believe in the death penalty-which is a shame because the people on trial sure did and giving life sentences in prisons that give these tyrants their own gardens to tend is no justice.
Yeah mom, I wish you would not of put "pen to paper" in this case. It seems maybe a feather or two have been rumpled.
It is good that he was executed. Him and his sons were evil people who thought they never had to be accountable to anyone for their actions.Saddams own people had a trial and convicted him of high crimes and carried out the punishment. He could have shot himself before he was captured.......but he did not cuz he was an evil coward. Civilized countries take care of business this way. I am gld for the trial and judgement. This is all good and moving in the correct direction.
