Peckerhead

This is a baby pileated woodpecker we spotted in our backyard just a bit ago:

Description
top
Size: 40-49 cm (16-19 in)
Wingspan: 66-75 cm (26-30 in)
Weight: 250-350 g (8.83-12.36 ounces)

White in wings, at base of primaries, and underwing linings. White conspicuous in flight; at rest shows only as small white spot at front of wing. Black and white stripes on face. White stripe extending from base of bill down neck. White stripe above eye and below crown. Throat white. Bill thick and silvery gray. Yellowish feathers over nostrils. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Pileated_Woodpecker_dtl.html

What a lovely bird. Our back yard is a refuge for so much wildlife I am very proud we are preserving the back 40 for creatures like this. So much building nearby more and more creatures are making or home their home. Deer live there as well and oftentimes we have bear that lumber through.

We have turkeys, sand cranes and sundry geese and duck families. Move over.

It's spring.

These things are so cool!!! I saw one of these in our yard a few weeks ago-it reminded me of home. As a kid I used to hike the woods looking for hallowed trees because that is where these Peckers live. And by Peckers I am not referring to men who are jerks.
